This premiere theatre program offers in-depth conservatory and repertory style training designed to inspire students to use theatre as a bridge to creativity and communication. The theatre curriculum prepares passionate students for university and pre-professional training in acting, writing and directing for stage and film in the 21st century. This unique Theatre Arts program offers almost three hours of daily instruction in theatre history and styles (including The Greeks, Shakespeare, contemporary and world theatre), technique, improvisation, monologue and scene study, script analysis, comedic and dramatic literature and structure, voice and movement. At Middle School of the Arts, students are exposed to all facets of theatre arts to find their own voice as an actor, director and/or writer. The dedicated faculty focus on developing students into great theatre artists by instilling principles of confidence, communication, relationship, presence, focus, creativity, imagination, persistence, listening, and discipline.

Special classes may include audition technique, acting for the camera, mask creation, musical theatre, stage make-up, Japanese Theatre, stand-up comedy, and multi-disciplinary performance.

While the program emphasizes process over product, students will be given progressive opportunities to perform, create and direct both original and published works each year in studio showcases, recitals or school productions.

About the Acting Program

The Acting Program offers comprehensive acting and movement training to students in grades 6 through 12, who want to learn theatre skills, engage in enrichment activities, major in theatre, attend a performing arts conservatory or aspire to achieve a career on stage or in film and television. Tailored for young actors interested in advancing their dramatic acting skills, the program encourages its students to develop healthy technique, experience a variety of styles, learn about the history of the craft, and prepare themselves for further study and/or a career in the arts. Students are exposed to professional local theatre makers, who visit the school’s campus to share their expertise and creativity through lectures.

Students enrolled in the Acting Program learn all aspects of the craft of acting, from fundamentals to advanced techniques. Each grade level offers its own unique acting class, exposing students to different approaches and styles every year. Over the course of the 4-year program, students have the opportunity to study production, play reading, dance for actors, singing for actors, movement styles, voice and diction, stage combat, audition technique, and other exciting topics.
