Middle School Exploratory

  • Leadership: This mandatory class teaches “soft skills,” including conflict resolution, communication strategies, public speaking skills, and more. The course uses team-building activities to teach real-world applications of leadership skills.
  • Chinese Culture: Students gain insight into the literary and cultural themes that make up the backbone of Chinese civilization through reading excerpts from the San Zi Jing (Three Character Classic), Di Zi Gui (Standards for Being a Good Student and Child), and stories about the origin of Chinese idioms.
  • Life Skills: Students learn library procedures, research skills and study habits, outdoor survival skills and more in this hands-on class.
  • Writer’s Workshop: An extra period dedicated exclusively to writing allows students to focus on developing ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice, and conventions in essays. Students create work in various genres, including journalistic writing, poetry, and expository, persuasive, narrative and descriptive writing.
  • Seminars: Weekly focal points include current events, education, arts, and other special topics. High school students are encouraged to sign up for a presentation slot if they have a topic of expertise they would like to share.

Exploratory courses for middle schoolers include: Leadership, Chinese Culture, Life Skills, Writer’s Workshop, and special topic seminars. Classes are usually held for 1-2 hours a week.
